Romans 8:1-17
| In 1941, President Roosevelt
addressed Congress on the war in Europe.
Most of what he said was forgotten by the audience. But what he said at the end of that speech still rings true today. He said he anticipated a world founded upon 4 essential freedoms: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from want, and Freedom from Fear. The problem with Roosevelt's vision, however, is that he forgot that a sinful world could never really produce these. But God's plan for us involves 4 freedoms that surpass these. Four freedoms made possible by the presence of the Holy Spirit. The first is Freedom from Condemnation. (vv. 1-4) Psalm 103:12 tells us God has removed our sins as far as the east is from the west. Through Jesus Christ we have been justified before God. Our own sins cause us to stand condemned, but Jesus' sacrifice covers the whole debt. We are no longer condemned by spiritual death. Romans 6:23 says the wages of sin is death, but...the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. We are already living eternal lives, if we have been transformed by Jesus. We are also no longer condemned by carnality or the desire to sin. As verse 4 says, we walk, not after the flesh, but the spirit. We are free from all condemnation through Jesus Christ. The Spirit also gives us Freedom through Spiritual Knowledge (vv. 5-8) We know that we have the Holy Spirit living in us. There is a great freedom in John 16:13, where we read that the Holy Spirit will guide us in all truth. We don't have to seek truth, the truth is in us. And following the Spirit, to be Spiritually minded, brings Peace. There is a great stress, a constant gnawing, on the hearts of those who want to follow their own will. They go on day to day, week to week, year to year, without ever filling the hunger they have inside. There is no reason for what they do except that they just do it. -They get up to the same old clock and go to the same old job. -They eat the same old lunch and tell the same old jokes. -They come home to the same old house and kiss the same old spouse. -They sit in the same old chair and pass the same old time. Perhaps they have the same old snack. Their lives lack adventure, but they won't find it, because where the grass seems greener, the same old stuff is going on. But the Spirit brings peace through fulfillment and adventure. As we yield our lives to Him, even the same old church can live. Even the same old marriage can receive new life. Even the same old you can be revived! The Spirit also gives us freedom to live like Christ. (vv. 9-13) II Cor 5:17 says that we live IN Christ and are like a new creation. Only those who allow God to transform them can live Christ-like. We can live in righteousness like Jesus. This is not just trying to be like Him. It is allowing the Holy Spirit to make us into His image. We have the freedom to live with a Christ-like attitude. To have an attitude that seeks to love rather than to control others. To be a servant, rather than a master. To give, rather than to take. When we stop focusing on Christ-likeness, our lives become sloppy, self-serving, and are not pleasing to God. Finally, vv. 14-17 tell us that the Spirit gives us the freedom to belong to the Kingdom. We gain the right of a new family- the family of God. People who would never come together otherwise, can love one another because they are brothers and sisters in Christ. We gain the privilege of inheritance. Together, we look forward to what God has prepared for us. As it says in I Cor. 2:9: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, what God has prepared for those who love Him. We have a new Heavenly Father. The words like "children of God" "sons of God" and "Joint-heirs" indicate that we belong to God. He adopts us into His family when we give our lives to Him. A Spirit filled life brings freedom. Freedom from condemnation, Freedom through Spiritual knowledge, Freedom to live like Christ, and freedom to belong to the Kingdom and family of God. There is no greater gift to give to a mother, than to walk in the Spirit. There is no greater gift for your children, than to model walking in the Spirit. Let's walk in the Spirit! |
