Blue Beetle Log |
Radio Log 1948 |
The Blue Beetle was originally broadcast as a twice a week 30 minute show
starring Frank Lovejoy. The first episode was broadcast on May 15, 1940.
Frank Lovejoy was replaced after four episodes and I don't know who the
actor is that replaced him. On June 26, 1940, The Blue Beetle became a
twice a week 15 minute show, and the story that started on Wednesday
concluded on Friday.
The Blue Beetle was really Police Officer Dan Garrett, who was shot on the
job and given Vitamin 2-X which gave him the strength of 10 men (according
to the first episode).
The Blue Beetle was created by Charles Nicholas and made its first appearance
in Fox's Mystery Men comic, issue #1, August 1939. The Blue Beetle got its
own comic (Spring 1940). It also spawned a short lived Newspaper strip in
addition to the short lived radio show.
The Blue Beetle Radio Show had 12 30 minute shows, and 24 15 minute shows,
all of which survive. Jerry Haendiges' website,
www.otrsite.com lists them as being
48 15 minute shows. However,
Radio Showcase lists the series
as having twelve 30 minute shows and 24 shows that are 15 minutes in length.
My log of the show has the days of the week in which the show was broadcast.
Radio Showcase and Jerry Haendiges disagree on when Episode #6 "Death Rides
on Horseback" was broadcast. Jerry says that it was broadcast on Friday,
May 31, 1940, but Radio Showcase says it was broadcast on Monday, June 3,
1940. Since the show was broadcast on Wednesday's and Friday's, Jerry's
date would seem to be right in this case. Since it was a syndicated program,
both dates could actually be right.
